Overview

In Vrndavana are many holy spots where Lord Krishna, Srimati Radharani, and Their spiritual associates performed joyful pastimes. Some of these spots are ponds (kundas), and there are dozens of such ponds, some almost the size of small lakes. Now, over five thousand years after Krishna's departure, many of these kundas have been lost to sight. Of the ones that remain Radha-kunda and Syama-kunda are two of the best known. These two are described elsewhere on this site in detail.

A Pastime at Prema Sarovara

One time as Krishna and Radharani were sitting together, a bee flew near Srimati Radharani and disturbed Her. Krishna asked a friend to chase away the bee. After finishing the task the friend proclaimed, "Madhusudana [a name for a honeybee] is gone." But Madhusudhana is another name for Krishna as well, and when Srimati Radharani heard this friend's proclamation She thought Krishna had left Her. She immediately felt intense spiritual separation. Seeing Her crying, Krishna also began to cry, and Their tears comingled and became the kunda known as Prema Sarovara.

Radha and Krishna had a number of pastimes at this place. It is said that Krishna dug this kunda with his flute one day when the cows were thirsty. It is also said that the Holi festival was celebrated here, along with the raksha-bandhana ritual (traditionally performed on the full-moon day of Shravana).

On the left side of the kunda is the Prem Bihari Temple. There is a sign over the door stating that the temple Deity was found in the kunda.

This is a good kunda for swimming, and it receives few visitors.

Directions: Prema Sarovara is located between Nandagram and Varsana, 1½ km north of Varsana, on the left side of the road. You cannot see this kunda from the road, but you can see the nearby old red walls and use them as a landmark. Prema Sarovara is about 100 m from the road.
