Madhavendra Puri Baitaka

A Comprehensive Guide to Śrī Vṛndāvana Dhāma

This is the place on the banks of Syama-Kunda where Srila Madhavendra Puri Gosvami sat down and rested on his parikrama around Govardhana Hill. Madhavendra Puri was the spiritual master of Isvara Puri, who later beceme the spiritual master of Lord Caitanya. When Madhavendra Puri came here, Radha-Kunda and Syama-Kunda had not yet been discovered. By the will of Lord Krsna, Madhavendra Puri decided to stop at this spot next to the two paddy fields that were later revealed by Lord Caitanya to be Radha-Kunda and Syama-Kunda. Madhavendra Puri discovered the Gopal Deity, also known as Sri Nathaji, near Govinda-Kunda and installed Him on Govardhana Hill. Sri Nathaji was later moved to a small town called Nathadwara in Rajasthana. Besides initiating Isvara Puri, Madhavendra Puri Gosvami also accepted Advaita Acarya and Lord Nityananda as his disciples. Madhavendra Puri became celebrated as the devotee for whom the Deity of Gopinatha, at Remuna in Orissa, stole the pot of ksira (condensed milk).

Directions: Across the street from Gopa Kupa well, behind a building, is where Madhavendra Puri sat while doing Govardhana parikrama, several years before Lord Caitanya revealed Radha Kunda. To get there you walk down the lane opposite the well you then enter the gate on your left. There is a small raised shrine on the right of the courtyard. This place is known as Vyasa Ghera.
